Shelter from the Rain

Who needs Yelp when you have fans like these?

Thanks to Midge Raymond for the shout out to Eureka Books on her blog. Midge said she escaped the weather by ducking into Eureka Books on a recent visit here.

We wear the “book geeks” tag with pride.  Great photos, too.

Wicked Bugs — Hot off the presses!

Wicked Bugs by Amy Stewart

Wicked Bugs by Eureka author Amy Stewart

Eureka Books is excited to announce the arrival of Wicked Bugs, the latest book by best selling Eureka author Amy Stewart.

And don’t think we’re biased just because Amy is co-owner of Eureka Books.  This handsome little hardcover is beautifully illustrated by Briony Morrow-Cribbs, the same artist who put her talents to the Wicked Bugs’ big sister, Wicked Plants.

You can come get your copy now, but Eureka Books is hosting the official book launch party with Amy from 6-9pm on May 7th during Arts Alive!  We will also have Briony’s signed, hand-colored prints from the original copper plates used to illustrate the books on display (and on sale) for Arts Alive!

Especially Special Blank Journals

Blank Journals from Ex Libris Anonymous

Blank Journals from Ex Libris Anonymous

Our blank book bins are restocked with recycled blank journals — former hardcover books repurposed by Ex Libris Anonymous for a new incarnation to fit your blank book needs.

We are especially excited about this batch because our staff hand picked these great, old hardbacks from our very own overstocked shelves for a trip to the book doctor to have their guts ripped out and their spines severed so that you can keep your most intimate thoughts between two stylish covers.

Seabird in the Forest

March 18th, 2011  |  by  |  published in Arts Alive, Bookstore

Seabird-Dunning This just in: Local author Joan Dunning's new book about a mysterious ocean bird known as the Marbled Murrelet hit our shelves this afternoon.

Dunning is both author and illustrator of Seabird in the Forest, a children's book that chronicles the early life of a Murrelet chick high in the canopy of an old-growth forest.

Dunning will be at Eureka Books for Arts Alive! on April 2nd from 6-9pm to sign copies of her new book.

Mega Author Signing on Saturday

December 1st, 2010  |  by  |  published in Bookstore, Local Authors

This coming Saturday from 6-9 p.m. we will have an all-star line-up of local authors at Eureka Books signing their new books. If you have someone passionate about local history on your list, signed copies of these books will make perfect, personalized gifts.

If you can't make in during Arts Alive, call (707-444-9593) or send us an email to reserve a copy. We can also ship gift-wrapped copies to anyone on your Christmas list.

Placenames Place Names of Humboldt County, California: A Compendium, 1542-2009 by Dennis and Gloria Turner ($50). The long-awaited second and much expanded edition is finally here (for sale on Dec. 3). The book adds 300 new names and revises 700 entries from the previous edition, a long-out-of-print and hard-to-find volume—we used to sell it easily for $100+. The Turners will be signing copies during Arts Alive.

Buhne The Sea Captain’s Odyssey: A Biography of Captain H. H. Buhne, 1822–1894 by Marvin Shepherd ($24.95). Captain Buhne was among the first white men to see Humboldt Bay and as a tugboat captain with unmatched knowledge of the shifting sands near the jetty, was responsible for bringing many ships into port. This is the first full-length biography of this important Humboldt pioneer. The books are being shipped to our store directly from the printer and are scheduled for delivery tomorrow. Marv will also be signing books on Saturday night.

Ld2 Locally Delicious: Recipes and Resources for Eating on the North Coast by the Heirloom Tomatoes ($24.95 will all profits going to local food programs). Last year's most popular local book is back in a new and expanded second edition. The Tomatoes will also be back in the store this Arts Alive signing books, talking local food, and (if we're lucky) serving local dishes.

Amy Stewart will also be in the store signing Wicked Plants and—if you're looking for a great stocking stuffer or low-cost gift—hardcover copies of Flower Confidential at $5 each.

North Coast Journal science columnist Barry Evans will sign his book Field Notes and his earlier books.

Humboldt-heartland-sm On Sunday, we will have signed copies of Humboldt Heartland: Ranching on California's Remote North Coast by Andy Westfall ($75, and worth it). For many years, Andy has been photographing Humboldt's historic ranches and interviewing their owners about life in the Humboldt Heartland. This is a magnificent book, beautifully printed and bound. It is the best looking book about Humboldt County published in recent memory.
