Annual Books Arts Show kicks off at Arts Alive!

September 3rd, 2011  |  by  |  published in Arts Alive, Book Arts, Events

Eureka Books is proud to host the Fourth Annual Book Arts show by the North Redwoods Book Arts Guild (NORBAG). The unique and colorful books will be on display through September 30th.

NORBAG’s annual showcase of local book artists will once again test your notions of what a book is and can be.  Think of how Picasso transformed the still life, and that’s what these artists do with the idea of a book.

For more information check the article by Simona Cariniin this week’s North Coast Journal.

Our own Amy Stewart is creeping out insectophobes from coast to coast with the release of her latest book, Wicked Bugs and the attention it’s getting from the New York Times:

Ms. Stewart, who grows poison plants in her garden in Eureka, Calif., likes the dark side.

Like the Arab warriors, back in 198 A.D., who hurled pots of scorpions at the Romans. (The scorpions fell into their eyes.)

Or the body lice that tortured Napoleon’s soldiers as they marched across Russia in the winter of 1812, suffering freezing temperatures with little food or shelter. One soldier, maddened by the “unbearable tingling” of the lice, stripped and threw his clothes into the fire. If he didn’t die of exposure, the typhus carried by the lice might have killed him.

Wicked Bugs is on sale now at Eureka Books and bookstores everywhere.

Sandy-vrem1000books

Book artist Sandy Vrem, harvesting some of the 1,000 books that members of the North Redwoods Book Arts Guild (norbag.net) made as a benefit for literacy here in Humboldt County. The books are $1 each, with all proceeds going to the Humboldt Literacy Project. Fewer than half remain, so come in and get some while they're still available.

1000 Little Books for Literacy

1000books

If you happen in to the Eureka branch of the library, you can see a display of some of the 1,000 books the members of NORBAG (the North Redwoods Book Arts Guild) have made to benefit the Humboldt Literacy Project.

On Friday night, September 3, from 6:30 to 8:30, we're hosting a party/reception for NORGAG and Humboldt Literacy Project, where the 1000 books will be unveiled and put up for sale, at $1 each. The text of each book is made from a single sheet of paper, cleverly folded, and then attached to decorative covers.

If you'd like to join us for the reception, please RSVP by calling the store (707-444-9593) or hitting the email link on our home page. Admission is free, but we hope you'll buy some books and support literacy here on the North Coast.

Laplantz

The late great Shereen LaPlantz, a multi-talented artist who specialized in the book arts (and weaving and jewelry-making) is having a retrospective show at the University of Puget Sound, through March 12.

See some of her work from the exhibit here.

Thanks to the North Redwoods Book Arts Guild (NORBAG) blog. LaPlantz was a founding member of the group.
